Get Healthy!
Nutrition Basics (as in really, really basic) The body is pretty amazing. And if you're ready to Get Healthy (or healthier), it's ready for you! Your body is intricately designed with a purpose to everything. Every organ, muscle, fiber and nerve has something to contribute. When they are not working, something is out of balance and you get sick.
As I’ve looked at many diets and fads and ‘things to do to be healthy’ by using natural methods, there are a few things that seem to be fairly standard: Lots of fresh Vegetables. Lots of fresh Fruits. Wash your hands before you eat. If you’re a meat eater, remember to eat fresh wild fish.
Two Common Myths As People Get Healthy: 1. “You get your best calcium from your body from milk.”
This was actually a brilliant marketing idea from the milk industry. The author of the book “The China Study” went to graduate school with an agenda to prove how important milk is to your diet. What he found from his research is that milk is not as healthy has he thought. (In fact, he no longer drinks milk!)
He also found an incredibly political situation. He didn’t publish his findings until he retired.
What he found is that you actually can get plenty of calcium from broccoli and other dark green vegetables!
2. “Food from the FDA is always trustworthy.”
The FDA has certainly brought about standards that are much higher than when they didn’t exist to regulate our foods.
However, remember that often foods that are approved at one time are later found to be unhealthy . (Think of all the red food dies. They have numbers because the formula has to change.)
If it comes from nature, it’s healthier for you. (Think of the China Study guy...) What To Do About It? I already mentioned some things above. But here is some more info that might be useful to you: First of all, DON’T go overboard! Don’t try to change everything at once. As you get healthy, do everything in moderation. Try one thing while keeping the other things that you know and love. It’s quite common for people to overhaul their pantries just to find out that they don’t like most of what they decided on doing.
For example, the “macrobiotic diet” is one of the healthier options. I tried some of the foods for a week. I couldn’t stand it. I would have starved because I disliked it so much! (Just thinking of it makes me shudder. And this was two years ago!) Fortunately, I didn’t starve because I had other food available. I now know that the macrobiotic diet is not for me. (But it might be for YOU!) One great (and very easy) tip to jump start being healthier is to just start spend a little more time shopping on the walls of your grocery store and a little less time in the aisles. If that doesn’t make sense to you, it will the next time you go to the grocery store! Or, just add a fresh fruit to your diet each day, or each week if each day is too much of a stretch! Bottom line, be good to yourself. You’ve gotten this far in life doing quite well, haven’t you?
Any improvement will make your body healthier, and then YOU’LL be healthier....and happier. And isn’t that worth something?
* Remember to consult with your doctor prior to changing your diet. For example, if you have food allergies or are on certain medications, not all fresh foods will be healthy for you!
