For Teachers

You have one of the most important jobs in the world. And I know first hand that you are often underpaid and under-appreciated for your level of dedication and everything that you bring to the table.

This page includes tips of what I did to be able to start my scheduled day on time and leave on time. I found that much of it was determined by my mind set, so I've included some EFT phrases to help you with that.

Yes, you can get done what you need to get done AND have students learn A LOT without having to give up so much of your personal life!

(The tips are mainly for elementary school teachers, since that is where my public school experience focuses. The tapping tips are for everyone!)

Class Structure and Climate

The Daily Five

I'm not one to reinvent the wheel. Doing so only takes more time and energy that could be spent doing what needs to get done and using creativity to build on what's already been invented.

By implementing The Daily Five for your literacy program, you get the structure that you need so that the kids know what's going on, have a sense of autonomy, are personally responsible for their learning and...YOU have the time to do group work, grading, etc.

In the back of this book is a day-by-day account of what to do each day. Just do it. Don't worry about getting creative on this part. Your life will be SO much easier.

I used to come in early and stay late. It was when I implemented this book that I could have a life outside of school! This is especially good for new teachers or overwhelmed seasoned teachers!

The CAFE Book: Engaging All Students in Daily Literary Assessment and Instruction

You know all that paperwork that you have to do? Well, this book breaks it down so that it's much more organized and easy to implement. Another book that you can just read and implement, allowing you to spend time and energy on the fun stuff...the kids!

"Healthy" Parties

If you have an option, have parties at the end of the day. Any sugar highs will be spread out amongst the parents rather than having them all concentrated on YOU.

In my class, I'd have "three course meal" parties. It sounded fancy, but was actually designed to keep the intake of sweets to a minimum.

I'd have the kids pick items that they wanted to bring, encouraging them to bring their favorite healthy foods.

Course 1: vegetable dip, vegetables and crackers.

Course 2: Fruits

Course 3: Cupcakes, cakes and cookies

It's amazing how much of the cupcakes and cookies went in the trash! Sugar highs were at a minimum, and the kids were happy!
